Is squalane and squalene the same thing?

The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser, as the name suggests, features squalane, not squalene. Squalene is the precursor to squalane – both are produced by the body, but squalane is the smaller molecule of the two. Squalene gets turned into squalane by the body, and is derived from olive oil.

Squalane is similar to what our body produces naturally, and so helps to balance the skin and protect the skin barrier. It doesn’t irritate the skin, and also has a softening, anti-ageing effect by enhancing the skin’s elasticity.
